Review & Analysis
The NAB Qantas Platinum credit card is the most prestigious of NAB‘s range of frequent flyer cards with the highest ratio of QFF points to dollars spent, complimentary Qantas Frequent Flyer membership, free travel insurance cover and a 24/7 concierge service. It is a dual card setup with an American Express version that allows you to earn points faster and a Visa card that’s more widely accepted but earns fewer points. To find out more about this QFF rewards card, check out our review.
Frequent Flyer Points
With a platinum level credit card you would expect more rewards, and that’s exactly what you’ll get with the NAB Qantas Platinum card. The account has two cards: the American Express version rewards each dollar spent with 1.5 QFF points while the Visa branded card earns 2 points per $3, which works out at roughly 0.67 points per dollar spent. If you are able to channel as much of your spending through the Amex card, you’ll earn a lot more points. If you use your card to purchase selected Qantas products and services, you’ll get a bonus point per dollar spent. Points are not capped so you can save them up and redeem them for a reward that you really want.
Other Rewards
The NAB Qantas Platinum credit card has a few tricks up its sleeve apart from the main attraction of earning Qantas rewards. As you get an American Express branded card, you get access to globaleshop so that you can order from stores based in the USA and UK that don’t normally deliver to Australia. You’ll also get special offers, discounts and exclusive promotions via American Express entre, Network and Selects reward programs.
Pros
By far the biggest advantage of NAB‘s Qantas Platinum card is the high level of QFF points earned per dollar spent using the American Express branded version. At 1.5 QFF points per dollar, this compares very favourably with other cards currently available such as the American Express Qantas Ultimate credit card and the ANZ Platinum Frequent Flyer credit card. However, this account comes with other features that are very useful for the frequent traveller.
As is the case with other NAB frequent flyer credit card offers, the NAB Qantas Platinum requires a Qantas Frequent Flyer account. If you don’t already have one set up, you can get one for free via NAB and save over $80.
This card comes with a range of insurances including international travel insurance, domestic interstate flight inconvenience insurance, transport accident insurance, insurance against burglary from hotels and motels in Australia, price and purchase protection as well as extended warranty insurance of up to 12 months on appliances purchases with your NAB Qantas Platinum card. These insurance policies are all underwritten by Chubb. As with other credit card insurance policies, it is advisable to carefully check what cover is offered and under what specific circumstances prior to cancelling any existing policy you may have.
Qantas Platinum credit cardholders also have access to NAB‘s concierge service, marketed as a kind of 24/7 personal assistant at your beck and call. If you’re a busy person with a lot going on, then this service alone may justify the annual fee. The concierge can take care of anything from the usual tasks such as booking flights and reserving a room for you at a hotel, to organising a party and arranging for flowers to be delivered. Useful? Yes!
Interest rates on purchases and cash advances are similar to other frequent flyer cards.
Cons
Like many other accounts operating with dual cards, the higher points to spend ratio is available only on the American Express. This is fine as long as you only shop where Amex is accepted, but we all know that many independent stores and businesses do not accept it as a form of payment. Therefore, much of your spending may be with the Visa branded card, which, in terms of earning rewards points, is crippled. On the upside, whatever points you do earn are not capped and there is no limit to how many you can earn.
If you are thinking of transferring your balance across from your existing account to the NAB Qantas Platinum card, the 4.99% p.a. for 6 months offer will most likely save you money, but there are other cards with better balance transfer deals available such as the Virgin Flyer and Citibank Platinum.
Lastly, the $290 p.a. annual fee is higher than other frequent flyer cards on the market. However, there are also many cards with higher annual fees and similar features. If you can use the card regularly and and take advantage of the extras such as the concierge and insurances, then the annual fee won’t be too much of a negative mark.
Eligibility
To be in with a chance of being approved, you’ll need to be an Australian citizen, be older than 18, earn at least $65,000 in taxable income per year and have a good credit record.
