Review & Analysis
Westpac’s Singapore Airlines Gold credit card is a dual card account with American Express and Visa versions, but only charges one annual fee. As its name would suggest, this card is linked with the Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer rewards program. Although this card has a lower earn rate than the more expensive platinum version, it remains an excellent way to earn KrisFlyer points as you spend.
Frequent Flyer Points
As there are two cards linked to the same account, there are two possible earn rates. The higher earn rate of 1 KrisFlyer mile per dollar applies to purchases made with the Amex card. Any purchases made with the Visa earn rewards at the rate of 0.5 KrisFlyer miles per dollar. The disparity in earn rates is actually one of the card’s main benefits. Unlike other accounts that have one card with one earn rate applied to all purchases, being able to earn more points on your Amex means you can optimise your spend to get more KrisFlyer points.
New cardholders will be rewarded with 5,000 bonus KrisFlyer miles upon their first purchase and you’ll get double points when using the card to purchase flights on the Singapore Airlines website.
Other Rewards
Although not strictly a reward, the Singapore Airlines Westpac Gold card does come with a suite of useful insurances. Use your card to purchase a ticket and you’ll be covered under the complimentary travel insurance policy for a period of up to 3 months. Purchase security and extended warranty insurance policies are also thrown in for free.
Pros
This entry level card is a fantastic way to build up KrisFlyer miles. The earn rate may not be as high as that offered by the platinum version, but this is offset by the significantly lower $125 p.a. Of course, free travel insurance is a very useful feature for any traveller, business or leisure.
This card is not only about earning rewards. Its 0.99% p.a. for 6 months balance transfer offer is quite competitive across the market, and particularly when compared with other frequent flyer cards. If earning KrisFlyer miles and consolidating your balances onto one card is important, then it doesn’t get much better.
Purchase interest rates are also something worth taking note of for any rewards card because, after all, the only way to earn points is to use the card. In this case, any purchases will be charged at a fairly average rate of 19.49% p.a., so at least you won’t be getting ripped off.
Cons
The earn rate on this card is significantly lower than that offered by the platinum version, which is to be expected. If you do end up putting a lot of purchases through this card, you’ll be missing out on a lot of KrisFlyer miles.
Compared with other cards, the interest free period on purchases (Up to 45 days) is shorter, but this is fairly standard for Westpac. If you keep your finances in good order, this won’t really matter to you.
Eligibility
To get approved for a Singapore Airlines Westpac Gold credit card you’ll need to be a permanent resident or citizen of 18 years of age and with good credit (black marks against your name on your report will definitely not help you). There’s also a minimum income criteria of $50,000.
Is This Card Right For You?
If you want to earn KrisFlyer miles you really only have the choice of this card and the platinum version. If you want the less expensive way to earn KrisFlyer miles and don’t mind the lower earn rate, or aren’t yet able to qualify for the platinum card, then this is the one for you.
