Review & Analysis

The Velocity NAB Standard credit card is a dual card account with Amex and Visa branded cards, giving you both the flexibility of payment and the ability to earn more Velocity points at a faster rate.

Frequent Flyer Points

NAB‘s Velocity Standard credit card is linked withe award winning Velocity Rewards program. Any points earned can be redeemed via the program for flights with the Virgin group of airlines. Alternatively, you can redee, your points for a range of products and services from top brands on the Velocity Rewards store.

With its dual card setup, you can earn points at two different rates. Purchases with the Amex version are rewarded at the higher rate of 1.5 points per $2 spent, while spend on the Visa is rewarded at the lower rate of 1 point per $2 spent.

As is the case with the gold version of this card, there is no cap on the number of points you can earn. Neither is there any date when your points will expire. Therefore, you can build up points over a period of time so you can redeem them for a larger reward.

Other Rewards

Though not strictly ‘rewards programs’, cardholders will get access to a range of deals and promotions on products, events and services with American Express Network and Selects, as well as Visa Entertainment.

Pros

Earning Velocity Rewards points is the biggest attraction of the Velocity NAB Standard credit card. With no points capping or expiry dates, the card is as suitable for low spenders who take longer to build up large numbers of points as it is for high spenders looking for a no-frills way to earn Velocity points. And if you want to channel more spend through the account, it’s free to add another cardholder.

The Velocity NAB Standard credit card also comes with purchase protection insurance whereby any goods purchased with your card may be repaired or replaced within 90 days of the date of purchase should they be lost, damaged or stolen. This feature is particularly useful if you buy electronic goods and gadgets regularly.

Another benefit of NAB‘s Velocity Standard card is the very competitive offer of 4.99% p.a. on balance transfers for 6 months. Not only does this compare very well with other frequent flyer cards, but it is also competitive across the whole market. Interest rates are also comparable with other frequent flyer cards, but the $65 p.a. is cheaper than most.

Cons

The earn rate for the Velocity NAB Standard credit card is on the lower side of what’s available. With other Velocity-linked cards available offering 1 point per dollar spent or more, you can make your money go further elsewhere. Also, while the purchase protection insurance policy is a welcome bonus, the card does lack the travel insurances and other cover offered by the gold version and many competing cards.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Velocity NAB Standard credit card you’ll need to be at least 18 years old and a permanent resident or citizen. You’ll need a minimum income of $50,000 and a good credit rating.

Is This Card Right For You?

It may lack some of the features of its gold cousin, but the want to earn Velocity NAB Standard card is still a great straightforward way to get rewarded. If you are a lower earner and want to earn Velocity Rewards, this is a great way to do it.
