Review & Analysis

With this card popular you’ll be able to earn some fantastic rewards, enjoy loads of features and competitive rates. You’ll earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points toward that much needed holiday break and the card has the benefits of the Woolworths Everyday Rewards program built in (meaning fuel savings and exclusive shopping offers) as well.

Frequent Flyer Points

Qantas points are earned anywhere you shop at a rate of $1 = 1 QFF point on most purchases. You earn even more than that, however, when you spend at Woolworths Supermarkets, BWS and BIG W (excluding Tasmania). Points earning rates are great and you can easily earn bonus points at participating stores. With the price of groceries some good points could be earned! The earning ratio is better than competing cards, as is the $89 p.a. annual fee.

Other Rewards

One of the best features of this card is the efficiency of getting your fuel vouchers and shopping offers at the same time as earning Qantas Frequent Flyer points. Remember, points can be redeemed for more than just flights. You can also spend them on gift cards, iPods, magazine subscriptions or your choice of over 600 other products available in the online Qantas Frequent Flyer Award store.

Pros

For the traveller, you’ll also like to know that the annual fee includes 24/7 concierge service for help to arrange hire cars, accommodation, tickets and more and that you can redeem your points for Award Flights to over 700 destinations or, alternatively, products, gift cards and experiences at the online Qantas Frequent Flyer Store.

In the first 6 months6 you’ll also get a low 5.99% p.a. rate on balance transfers from non-HSBC/Woolworths store and credit cards.

Cons

The 19.99% p.a. purchase rate is competitive, but not fantastic. Also, be aware that you have to have a Qantas Frequent Flyer account already (which is standard fare for almost all frequent flyer cards) and if you aren’t a Qantas member then there’s an additional fee to pay separately to Qantas. You should sign up with Qantas before signing up for the card. Remember no points are earned on business expenses, interest free promotions, balance transfers and cash advances.

Finally, make sure you’re realistic about how much you actually need to spend to save enough points for a flight or other reward and whether or not your spending and lifestyle can attain that. Remember too that you might not always get what you want. Award flight seats (particularly Classic Award seats) are subject to capacity controls and availability is sometimes limited. Some flights may not have any Classic Award seats available.

Eligibility

You need to be at least 18 years of age and earn a minimum of $50,000 to qualify. A credit check will be carried out.
